Which shark species are really dangerous?

If we go by the official list of dangerous sharks (e.g. from the International Shark Attack File ISAF, an institution which analyzes and collects reports on man eating sharks & shark attacks) the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) ranks first, followed by the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) and the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas).

1. Great White Shark
2. Tiger Shark
3. Bull Shark

The fact is, however, that when analyzing the situation in greater detail, the victims usually put themselves into situations, or already found themselves in situations which sharks find challenging or provoking and which prompt their reaction.

Attack statistics must thus avoid reverting to useless and undiscussed numbers. Innocent readers who accidentally come across such Internet statistics may otherwise receive a completely wrong picture on the realistic danger surrounding sharks.

Below are some myths about sharks, and information about the myth to clear some things up.

1. Sharks are all the same - Incorrect, there is no typical shark. There are nearly 400 species of sharks & they vary lots in size, diet. lifestyle etc. More than 80% of man eating sharks (& non) are under 5ft long.

2. Sharks always attack - Incorrect. The chances of being attacked are very unlikely. Lets put things into perspective...you are 250 times more likely to be killed by lightning than you are by man eating sharks. The fact that humans are increasing invading shark inhabitats more incidents are going to arise.

3. Sharks are eating machines - Incorrect. Sharks eat a lot less than many people believe; many go for days, sometimes weeks between feeding.

Some shark species (not necessarily man eating sharks) are generalists and eat whatever they can find, but lots are very selective of what they eat. Whale sharks for instance feed on plankton.
